Study to identify sources of microplastics polluting groundwater | Delhi News

New Delhi: The environment department will conduct a study on the presence of microplastics in the water tables of the capital. It seeks to identify and prioritize Delhi’s groundwater sources (aquifers) in terms of microplastic pollution and map them based on microplastic concentration.
“The Delhi government has proposed a study on the presence of microplastics in groundwater, including Yamuna. The study was proposed in reference to the National Green Tribunal registering a case based on a TOI report published in the Chennai edition, ”said an official from the department, who invited expressions of interest in carrying out the study.
The study will also suggest ways to reduce microplastics through an action plan. Priti Banthia Mahesh, Toxics Link’s chief program coordinator, said: “Microplastics are small particles of plastic that are less than 5mm in size. Microbeads added in cosmetics are an example of primary microplastics, while secondary microplastics are generated when discarded plastic items break down into small particles over time because plastic does not biodegrade. There are many sources of microplastics entering water bodies – through sewage, plastic pollution from land-based sources.
Numerous studies have shown that microplastics are harmful to marine life, including fish and small organisms, she added. “Small organisms and fish eat microplastics and through that they enter the food chain and eventually the fish end up on human plates,” she said. “The impact of microplastics on human health needs urgent study. Many toxic chemicals found in plastic are trapped in microplastics, they biomagnify and can have a serious impact on all living things and the environment.
One official said: “Because groundwater can stay in the same aquifer for many years, microplastics in the water could lead to long-term contamination. Some studies have linked higher contamination of microplastics to human activities, including industrial activity, effluent discharges and waste dumping.
