Sanoma Oyj: Malmberg’s FSC®-certified textbooks support responsible forestry

Malmberg, our learning company in the Netherlands, has already been using 100% FSC®-certified paper in its printed learning materials for some years. To reinforce its commitment, Malmberg obtained an FSC® certificate for its textbooks. As a certificate holder, Malmberg is authorized to use the FSC® label on products to promote its books and communicate its commitment to sustainable sourcing and the environment.

Climate and environmental protection is one of the key themes of Sanoma’s sustainability strategy. We promote the responsible use of forest resources with paper grades from trusted certified sources such as the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), an international standard for responsible forestry. FSC®-certified forests preserve biological diversity, water resources and crucial ecosystems, also contributing to social and economic problems in surrounding communities. To obtain an FSC certificate, the entire value chain – from the forest to the stationery and up to the printing of our school textbooks – must be FSC® certified. FSC® labeling also requires full transparency of the entire chain of custody.

“At Malmberg, we made the choice to use only FSC®-certified paper in our books several years ago, but obtaining the certificate for our own products brings us additional benefits and commercial advantages. We believe that it’s important to communicate to our customers that we create inclusive learning solutions for children in an environmentally sustainable way. The certificate also reflects our commitment to fair and responsible sourcing,” says Philip ObersSupply Chain Team Leader at Malmberg.

For Sanoma, continuous research to increase the share of certified fibers used in our paper products is essential. Safeguarding biodiversity protects wildlife populations and supports adaptation to climate change. Already 95% of the paper qualities used by Sanoma come from FSC® and PEFC® certified sources. Sanoma’s goal is to source only paper made from certified fibers by 2023. Sanoma aims to be carbon neutral in its own operations and across the value chain by 2030, and the use Head of Forests also supports this commitment.

This article is part of a series of stories showcasing the products and services of our learning operations across Europe. Sanoma strives to minimize its environmental impacts throughout the supply chain in accordance with its sustainability strategy.

Malmberg, based in the Netherlands, develops learning methods for primary, secondary and vocational education and offers these methods through books and digital learning platforms. FSC is the most rigorous international standard for responsible forestry. FSC-certified forests preserve biological diversity, water resources and essential ecosystems. The FSC standard also respects workers’ rights and supports the economic prosperity of surrounding communities. FSC Chain of Custody certification ensures that certified wood products are tracked from forest to end product (and, where applicable, qualified recycled materials are used), which reinforces the legitimacy of the FSC claim throughout. the supply chain.
