PreciseInhale Provides High-Precision, Groundbreaking Results in New Study of Inhaled Household Pollutants in the Journal of Environmental Science and Pollution Research

PFOA is a common toxic substance found in industries and households around the world. In the study, carried out at Institute of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska InstitutePreciseInhale acreached a standard deviation of 10-15% and demonstrated that the concentration of PFOA was four times higher by inhalation than by ingestion – a new result not previously published.

Perfluoro-octanic acid (PFOA) is an industrial surfactant used in industries, chemical processes and households around the world. It is commonly found in carpets, upholstery, clothing, floor wax, sealants, textiles and many more. Concerns and research on the toxicity of PFOA are long established, with the substance considered a possible carcinogen, toxic to the liver, and toxic to the immune system (1).

Now, in a new study conducted at KI Institute of Environmental Medicine, scientists explored the effects on rats of PFOA in house dust when inhaled or ingested. To expose the rats, the scientists chose to use the single animal from both ISAB live intubation method: “A relevant inhalation exposure condition was established using the PreciseInhale system, where intubated rats spontaneously inhaled house dust.”

Unlike conventional “tower test” technologies, ISAB’s intubation method delivers aerosol directly into the lungs of individual test rodents, bypassing the nose, while carefully monitoring aerosol concentration and patterns. individual respiratory. The result is exceptionally accurate data.

In this study, the accuracy of the PreciseInhale results was indeed high – with a standard deviation of 10-15% in all exposed subjects. In new unpublished results, PreciseInhale also found that the blood concentration of PFOA in rats was four times higher when inhaled than when ingested after exposure to the same levels of dust. This is a very socially relevant result demonstrating that inhalation is an effective exposure channel for pollutants like PFOA both at home and at work.
