The Liberian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have been stepping up environmental awareness amid daily reports and occurrences of environmental degradation and pollution. environment across the country.
With financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), EPA, in collaboration with UNDP, launched a two-day national and subnational environmental awareness campaign on Thursday, June 2, 2022 in Gbarnga, Bong County.
Held under the auspices of the Cross-Cutting Capacity Development Project (CCCD), the two-day event, which attracted local government officials including mayors and development superintendents from 12 counties, representatives of environmental non-governmental organizations and departments, agencies and commissions seek to improve the understanding and interpretation of global environmental trends and socio-economic implications.
Speaking at the start of the campaign, CCCD project manager Aaron SM Wesseh said the overarching goal of the crusade is for local government officials to understand the environmental issues prevalent in Liberia and how to incorporate the conventions of Rio in sustainable development. priorities.
Mr. Wesseh revealed that the two-day activities will enable participants to understand the critical environmental issues in Liberia and how to mitigate, adapt and build resilience.
According to him, the presenters will explain the mandate of the EPA and its collaboration with other ministries and supervisory agencies and the role of local government in the sustainable management of the environment.
He also noted that environmental awareness would also promote networking between and among national and local stakeholders in raising awareness for sustainable environment.
Mr. Wesseh said at the event that the EPA will seek the championship of local officials in enforcing the EPA’s mandate after it has been explained and interpreted to them.
Speaking on behalf of the EPA, the focal point of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, JS Datuama Cammue congratulated the participants for accepting the invitations to participate in the environmental awareness campaign in Gbarnga , in Bong County.
For her part, the Mayor of the town of Gbarnga, Lucia Herbert, welcomed the participants and asked them to take the environmental awareness campaign very seriously because, according to her, every town in the country faces an environmental problem that needs to be solved.
